Exam Question Command Words

What is 'meant by' or 'give':

Requires a definition or examples.

Calculate:

This requires calculation comprising at least four stages.

For example, locating the data, identifying the formula, using the data in the formula and making the calculation.

Using:

                               

This requires students to use an appropriate diagram or formula.

Explain:

Requires a definition, a reference to how the business in the question is influenced by this factor and some analysis.

Also, interpretation of graphs.

Assess:

Requires a definition, an answer in the context of the business in the question and analysis. (This means, as a consequence of this, another argument may be, the importance of this is…..) Finally, you must make a judgement in relation to the question.

Evaluate:

Requires an informed judgement and supported conclusion.

Students review information, make connections and make a conclusion.

Students consider strengths, weaknesses, alternative actions and relevant data about the business in the question.
